Breast Enlargement Surgery
Breast enhancement or breast enlargement – essentially, increasing the size and volume of your breasts to a desired shape and size – is one of the most common and popular procedures performed each year by members of the American Society of Cosmetic Breast Surgery, including Dr. Shumway at his San Diego clinic. More and more San Diego area women turn to Dr. Shumway for the latest in breast enhancement procedures.
Dr. Shumway is experienced in all of the approved breast enlargement techniques, the most popular of which is called Transumbilical Breast Augmentation, also known as TUBA. The latest in breast augmentation procedures, Transumbilical Breast Augmentation is performed with IV sedation, which is a more gentle and safe option than general anesthesia (it also allows for a faster and easier recovery).
During the TUBA procedure, Dr. Shumway starts by making a tiny incision at the navel; then a small tunnel is created under the skin which allows access to the breasts. Next, Dr. Shumway creates surgical pockets for the implants, and tissue expanders are used to inflate the pockets and provide shape. Finally, the implants (deflated at this stage) are inserted into the pockets; then the implants are filled, checked for size and symmetry, and the navel incision is closed. The safe procedure typically takes less than two hours and patients can generally return home a few hours later.
This procedure is so popular among San Diego women because it takes less than two hours and offers quick recovery (usually about three days before you can return to work and about a month before you’re back to all normal activities), little bleeding, less risk of infection, and minimal scarring. Some women report mild bruising and tenderness. Dr. Shumway continues to offer other breast implant surgeries but performs TUBA on most patients because of these reasons
After the surgery, women are encouraged to rest and take it easy for a few days to give the body time to heal. You will also wear a special post-surgery bra and use ice packs as needed; try to avoid any arm movements that strain your chest muscles. Dr. Shumway will also prescribe pain medication and antibiotics and will schedule several follow-up visits with you as well.
