TUBA Breast Augmentation in San Diego

The women of San Diego, La Jolla and Southern California expect the very best when it comes to breast augmentation procedures and why shouldn't they? After all the entire world looks to the west for innovation and expertise in breast augmentation procedures.

It is no surprise that superior techniques and methods have evolved since the inception of breast enhancement surgery in the 1960's. One unique procedure called Transumbilical Breast Augmentation or "TUBA" has emerged into the forefront of cosmetic surgery.

What is TUBA?

The latest medical procedure, in the increasingly popular field of breast augmentation, is the transumbilical approach. Breast implants are inserted through a very small incision concealed inside the navel. This procedure takes less that two hours, offers a very quick recovery, minimal bleeding, less breast trauma than with traditional approaches, a lower risk of breast infection and finally, leaves NO breast scars!

Is TUBA Right for Me?

During your consultation at Shumway Cosmetic Surgery, you will have an opportunity to discuss your goals and expectations with Dr. Shumway. He will then assess your breasts and help you decide which implant size, shape and approach is best for you. Although Dr. Shumway performs all four breast implant approaches, the majority of his patients choose the TUBA approach.

Choosing a Breast Augmentation Surgeon

Dr. Shumway is the Founder and Director of Shumway Cosmetic Surgery located on the Scripps Memorial Hospital campus in La Jolla, California. He is the current President of the California Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the former President of the American Society of Cosmetic Breast Surgery. He studied many years at Duke University in General and Thoracic Surgery and in Surgery of the Head and Neck. This was followed by a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Aesthetic Laser Surgery. With over 11 years of surgical training and 12 additional years of breast augmentation experience teaching the TUBA technique, Dr. Shumway is the premier physician on the West Coast performing Transumbilical Breast Augmentation.

How is a Transumbilical Breast Augmentation Performed?

The surgery is performed by making a small curved incision around the upper rim of the belly button. Using a slender instrument, a narrow tunnel is created under the skin through the subcutaneous fat which extends to the breast.

After creating surgical pockets to house the implants, inflatable tissue expanders are inserted through the tunnel to properly shape the pockets. The tissue expanders are then removed and the actual deflated implants are rolled up like a cigar and inserted into the newly created pockets. The implants are then filled with sterile saline from an IV bag through soft plastic tubes. After checking the patient for symmetry in various positions, the fill tubes are removed. A one-way valve in the implant instantaneous seals as the tube is withdrawn. The navel incision is then closed using dissolvable sutures.

The procedure is performed with IV sedation, a safer alternative to general anesthesia. The patient is allowed to return home hours later and most patients return to work within three days.

On the Road to Recovery

Rest is recommended for the first few days following surgery. A post-surgical sports bra is typically worn for the first few weeks. Most discomfort associated with the breast surgery will be well-controlled with the oral pain medication prescribed by Dr. Shumway. Antibiotics will also be prescribed. Most patients report only mild swelling, bruising and tenderness following the surgery. Most patients return to work within three days and resume their normal activities within four to six weeks.
